  • How To Get Those Dope Instagram Shots

How To Get Those Dope Instagram Shots

If you follow me on Instagram, what you may not know is that i take a lot of my own photos. Having been a full time photographer for some time, I know how difficult it is to communicate your vision for a photo to someone shooting for you. So what are your options? Shoot it yourself, although not always possible, usually it is! First off, you’ll generally need two things, a solid tripod, and a shutter remote, or a camera with wifi remote capabilities. Manfrotto has always been my go to as far as tripods go, they make reliable product that lasts forever and can take a beating. if you are cost conscience go with one of the lower end Manfrotto tripods, although investing in a proper tripod is super important and worth the money.

When it comes to remotes, regardless of camera brand they all generally have proprietary remotes you can purchase fro your camera. If not there are always 3rd party ones you can pickup as well, the best part is you can get remotes for under $10. However with the advances in camera tech, most cameras these days come with Wifi included so they generally come with an app to control your camera from the comfort of your phone.

Now as far as setup goes, it’s super easy! frame your shot, test the lighting and make sure it’s exposed correctly. Then all you have to do is pose and shoot. If you are running the remote from your phone you’ll be able to see the frame on your phone screen and frame it  as you shoot and you can get the exact shot you want. Alternatively you can also pickup an external monitor and have it face you if your camera doesn’t have a flip screen on the back. I recommend Neewers field monitor, I’ve been using it for a while and enjoy it quite a bit.

Give it a go and let me know what works for you guys!

  • Back To School Staples

    Back To School Staples

With Summer coming to an end, for some of you this means back to school! Although it’s been a while since I’ve had that feeling of anticipation, I still remember it fondly. Getting my new gear lined up and setup for the upcoming months. I think there are always some staples that people should have on hand for back to school but will translate later in life too. A lot of my rituals and items I pickup oddly enough began back in those days, the only difference is just tweaks here and there along the way. So I figured I’d give you guys/girls a quick list of things I always like to have when back to school was just around the corner.

With sneakers being such an important aspect of what I wear, low socks are always in demand for me. They put my sneakers in full view without distraction, pair that with bungie bottom pants and you’re set! That and I become lazy from time to time and don’t feel like doing laundry! So having a large collection of them is super clutch for me.

One of the first things I would always buy is a fresh new pair of jeans. Now there are A LOT of options out there when it comes to jeans, but for me above and beyond all the designer stuff, having that one pair of tried tested and true jeans was ESSENTIAL! Enter Levi’s, THIS IS WHAT THEY DO! They made jeans popular in the 1920’s, and they have been making great stuff ever since! Affordable, durable, and they look good.

Just as important, if not more is a solid roster of comfortable boxers. For me it’s always been boxer briefs. They give the support needed as well as enough room to breath and move around. For everyone it’s different, so make sure you have at least enough to last you 3 weeks, or again, you’ll find yourself doing laundry a lot more often than you would like. to add to that, not that colour matters, but unless i’m rocking a pair of white pants I always go with black as my standard colour.

    Keep it clean gents

Keeping your face trim and looking it’s best is one of the most important thing a guy can do, and for some reason I find most guys just shave for the sake of shaving. They don’t go into masks, skincare, etc. Start your day with a smooth clean shave with this bad boy. Making sure you keep that clean look going, if that is what you are going for. If not a full shave, some stubble is good, just make sure to keep it maintained and lined up.

If you haven’t noticed by now i don’t doing more work than I need to, that being said technology is great for this. Long gone are the days of manually brushing your teeth, and seeing as how having a great smile gets you so far in life GET YOURSELF A GOOD TOOTHBRUSH!

Electric brushes are much more efficient that just a normal brush and they clean your teeth soo much better, this is the one I personally use. They come in a variety of styles and prices, so find one that works for you.

Finally, Prevention and moisturizing. I cannot stress enough how far some lip balm, foot and hand lotion go. Keep that skin smooth and moisturized and you will feel like a million bucks, I do that’s for sure!

All in all grooming and some basic threads will go a long way when you are trying to figure out things you need to pickup in order to look and feel your best upon your return to school. You can find all these products on Amazon.ca and they will be at your front door the day after you order them!

  • Get That Creative Space From Home

Get That Creative Space From Home

Mel and I just bought our first house and luckily we were able to find something with a bunch of space for the both of us, including an office/creative space for each of us! That being said, I’ve had to slow my roll on Instagram and social in general just because of all the work I’m doing on the house for the next month or two. The good news however is that when it’s all done, I’ll be starting a YouTube, Podcast show, and going a lot harder on the blog and social all around! So having the space I’m building a nice studio setup in my office to host guests and just have a nice comfortable space where people can come, collaborate and create some fun stuff. Main difference from my old setup will be Podcasting. I picked up a Mixer, 4 mics with booms arms to put into a conference table. Got 4 rolling chairs, and of course wall mounted 48″ LED TV. Along with the little odds and end of course headphones, headphone amp, AV Cables, and a bunch of other stuff. Stay tuned as I’ll give you guys a tour of my office once it’s up and functional. But for those looking to start your own podcast on a budget I’ll list out what I picked up to get the ball rolling.

That’s basically it as far as equipment I purchased to get it all started, there are obviously better quality pieces you can get if your budget allows it. Chances are I will be upgrading my mics in the future but for now this setup will do. I record everything using Adobe Audition as well, I record and edit all in one program. To go along side this I plan on doing video podcasts so, recording video is important. A good tripod and camera to capture everything going on. I have my trusty Nikon D750 as well as my Manfrotto 190 along with a Zoom H4N unit for backup audio in case something goes wrong with the original recording on my computer.

I’ll give you guys a full tour of the office once it’s up and running and you can let me know what your setup is like! Looking forward to getting that done for you guys this week.

  • Things I Didn’t Account For When I Bought My First House

Things I Didn’t Account For When I Bought My First House

Buying a house, especially in today’s market in what seems like a never ending sea of cranes just floating in the sky of the Toronto skyline is a HUGE accomplishment. What with all the excitement, and planning to give the 107 year old house a facelift, I didn’t stope to think of the things i would need to accomplish said goals. TOOLS! something simple, yet an oversight all the same. Being brought up in a family of contractors, tools were just something that were always there. Taken for granted until the day you move out and realize you actually own very few of your own. So, what do you need as a base for your tools once you have your own place?

Well for starters, I picked up a double drill set by DeWalt. A combo pack which included a regular cordless drill as well as an impact drill.

Having a solid set of drills is an absolute must! A sold set of screwdrivers as well. One thing that I didn’t even consider until the day I needed it was a ladder, and boy they are not as cheap as i thought they would be considering you JUST climb them -_-!

I ended up pick up two ladders technically, having 10′ ceilings, I quickly realized that I didn’t have much of a choice. So I picked up a multi configuration ladder to have flexibility to use it as more than just a traditional ladder.

I also picked up a more day to day step ladder that comes in handy for most situations when the big boy is just to cumbersome to use.

Now I already owned a lot of the basic stuff, but with doing your own renovations comes necessary tools that you don’t realize you may need. Like a Mitre saw for example. I just ordered this Dewalt one in order to cut hardwood, laminate, 2×4’s, baseboards, and trim with ease.

And to round out the list of some of the stuff I’ve had to buy so far, is of course a Shop-Vac. With all the mess I’ve been making a regular vacuum or broom just doesn’t cut it! You gotta be able to have a clean environment to work in and picking up little crap left behind after demolition is key.

So you guys, just remember, when it’s time to do stuff yourself, there are so many other things to consider other than time, materials, and design. And make sure to have the tools you need to do the job. Do it right the first time and you won’t have to do it again until you want a new look!
